Germplasm collections of poplars and willows
Germplasm collections of poplars and willows
Germplasm collections of poplars and willows are maintained ex-situ at CREA Forests and Wood Research Center (Casale Monferrato); by number of species and genotypes represented these genetic reserves constitute a heritage of undoubted international value.
This activity is of strategic importance for the conservation of biodiversity, for the production of “qualified” nursery material to be used in environmental and river restoration activities, and to implement breeding programs
Over 1800 accessions are mainly referable to five main species of poplar (Populus nigra, Populus alba, Populus deltoides, P. ×canadensis, P. ×generosa) are maintained in clonal archives, seed orchards e arboretum; as regards willows, tens species are propagated, even if Salix alba and its interspecific hybrids are mainly represented.
