The laboratory tests and applies innovative methods and procedures relevant to forest planning and management, especially those related to forest variables sampling, to new-forests dynamics, and to the characterisation of private forests as compared to public ones.
The activities carried out imply using GIS and mobile GIS technologies, remote and proximity sensing techniques, image processing, photointerpretation as well as implementing tree volume and biomass models into computer assisted procedures.
Over the years the laboratory has gained experience in processing and analysing LiDAR data with an area-based approach (projects completed: ITALID, SOLIDAR and ALFORLAB) and in developing protocols for the survey of geo-referenced forest data (field software developed: RELASKOPE, RESIA1-2, SMARTFOR).
The laboratory cooperates with the Arma dei Carabinieri Forestali (former National Forest Service) in forest monitoring activities (e.g. CONECOFOR project), staff training, testing hi-tec equipment (project completed: TARGETSTARS). The laboratory supports also other forestry administrations, mainly in the Alpine area.
