The laboratory hosts staff and equipment dedicated to the study of greenhouse gas fluxes and volatile organic compounds between the biosphere and the atmosphere through the application of micro-meteorological techniques. The studies are carried out mainly within the Experimental farm and inside the Presidential estate of Castelporziano where the manager coordinates the studies at a site belonging to the European ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) network.

The laboratory provides technical support at other experimental stations located on the national territory and belonging to the ICOS network.

The measurements carried out in the field allow the application of models capable of simulating plant-atmosphere interactions in response to climate change and pollutants by adopting a multi-layer approach with algorithms based on ecophysiological processes affecting the soil-plant continuum.

The modeling activity is functional to the creation of a tool for the management of urban green areas (urban forests, parks, road trees) which estimates the amount of pollutants (ozone, nitrogen oxides and particulates) seized by vegetation and quantifies them as services ecosystem.
