Observatory on the gender gaps in the primary sector and in rural areas (ODGPR)
Description
Observatory is presented

Observatory on the gender differences in the primary sector and in rural areas (ODGPR) has been introduced as part of the activities concerning periodic and short-term economic analysis led by CREA The Research Centre for Agricultural Policies and Bioeconomy (CREA-PB). The ODGPR’s primary goal is to represent a benchmark in theprimary sector and in rural areas, encouraging the debate and the synergy between different thematic approaches and projects developed by CREA. The ODGPR is set to contribute to the reinforcement in terms of participation of women in the field, promoting collaborations with other CREA centers, institutional and civil social organizations engaged in gender equality issues. Among the objectives of the Observatory is to raise awareness among institutional decision-makers on the application of the principle of gender equality within agricultural and rural policies, while valuing and recognizing the contribution made by the main stakeholders representing the actual needs of the women involved. A key role is played by the Consultative Body, whose primary purpose is to give a voice to the main women-led organizations in the agricultural and rural sectors, as well as to associations engaged in enhancing women’s role, fostering the exchange of experiences, advancing the mapping of needs, spearheading new projects.
"The Observatory's activities are aligned with those in the Project Sheets of RetePAC, managed by CREA, focused to women in the Primary and rural areas:
• CR 02.8 GENDER EQUALITY NEI PSP - GE_PSP
• CR 03.03 DONNE E LAVORO DIPENDENTE NEL SETTORE PRIMARIO
• CR 03.10 IL RUOLO DELLE DONNE NELLE FILIERE PRODUTTIVE DEL SETTORE PRIMARIO

Behind the logo of ODGPR - Observatory on the gender differences in the primary sector and in rural areas.

When it comes to the commission of the ODGPR logo, requested to Martina Mirante, young designer and intern at our Centre, It has been asked to take into account the representation of the primary sectors - divided into agriculture, forestry, and maritime - alongside a silhouette resembling a female figure. The primary sector has been consequently depicted through three juxtaposed forms, capable of synthesizing the unique features of the primary contexts and evoking a rural landscape.
The human silhouette, on the other hand, is meant to break down western aesthetic and artistic standards associated with women and nature. The Observatory was created to observe, research and study gender issues within the agricultural sector; for this reason, acknowledging gender stereotypes was crucial when it came to visual representation.
The ultimate design resembles a female face with an austere expression, designed to challenge an imagery that perpetrates the stereotypes that represent women as pure, docile, beautiful, or compliant.
Instead, the image seeks to restore the complexity of women in all their conditions and expressions, without reducing them to a stereotyped or limiting model. The goal is to offer a visual sign capable of including and recognizing the diversity of female experiences, avoiding any identity-based simplification or reduction.
Thus, the ODGPR logo was born: a window onto a rural landscape, guarded with care and pride by a figure whose piercing gaze invites us to witness and give dignity to all those who hope to live and work with nature with equal opportunities and rights.
